Companies need to continue to promote and facilitate responsible recruitment in their own operations and supply chains with the aim of:

  • Preventing dishonest recruitment practices (e.g. worker-paid recruitment fees, destruction of workers’ identity documents, etc.)
  • Keeping workers safe and preventing further vulnerability to fraudulent practices (e.g. debt bondage from lenders, human trafficking, forced labour)
  • Supporting business to meet industry requirements and improve worker retention, productivity and satisfaction (see Responsible Recruitment Toolkit)
  • Preventing forced labour from happening, enabling workers to find and secure jobs for free and preventing the need for reimbursement and remedy

Recruitment journey

Figure 1 from B4IG’s Fair Recruitment Toolkit outlines key stages in a typical recruitment journey for workers (especially for migrant workers). At each stage, workers are vulnerable to exploitation and may have to pay fees for introductions or services. In many labour corridors, such payments are common, and workers often pay a large amount of money. Many take loans to cover these costs, resulting in debt bondage as they work months or years to repay them.

Note: The toolkit was initially developed by the Business for Inclusive Growth (B4IG), under the leadership of VINCI. On 1 January 2024, B4IG officially merged with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)’s Equity Action Imperative.
