The Ipieca sustainability article round-up showcases recent sustainability-related achievements, projects and news from Ipieca members, demonstrating their support for the Ipieca Principles around advancing environmental and social performance across the energy transition. We also highlight initiatives from our partner organizations and share insights from key United Nations meetings.

Chevron

Sharing data to support wider industry methane emissions reductions

Chevron is collaborating on a number of data sharing initiatives to reduce methane emissions, including: an OGCI satellite detection pilot programme in Iraq that led to all detection emissions being mitigated; participation in the Environmental Partnership; joint flyovers in the Permian Basin region to exchange information; taking part in Project Astram focused on near-continuous sensor monitoring.

OMV

OMV joins UNEP Oil & Gas Methane Partnership 2.0

OMV joins 23 other Ipieca members in the OGMP 2.0, a comprehensive reporting framework aiming to improve the accuracy and transparency of methane emissions reporting across the oil and gas industry. The move strengthens OMV’s commitment to reducing methane emissions, as the company works towards an exploration and production methane intensity of 0.1% or lower by 2030.

Repsol

Repsol begins large-scale production of renewable fuels

The new plant has the capacity to produce 250,000 tons of renewable fuels from waste annually, an alternative fuel that can be used in existing vehicles and infrastructures, to help accelerate the decarbonisation of transport.

Sonangol

Sonangol becomes first African oil producer to join ‘Aiming for Zero’

Ipieca member Sonangol, one of the largest oil producers in Africa, has joined the OGCI ‘Aiming for Zero Methane Emissions Initiative’, alongside around 100 companies committed to reducing methane emissions from oil and gas facilities to near zero by 2030.

The report outlines Woodside's investment of AUD 33.3 million in strategic partnerships, employee volunteering, and mandatory contributions, with an aim to measure the impact of these initiatives.

International Maritime Organization (IMO)

Future marine fuels and technology - new website launched

A new website developed by the Future Fuels and Technology Project, a partnership project between IMO and the Republic of Korea, supports the development of new regulation within the possible IMO Net Zero Framework to achieve the targets contained in the 2023 IMO GHG strategy. It provides access to latest information on zero and near-zero marine fuels and technologies, including pricing information and latest research. Ipieca is one of the website's data and content providers.

Ipieca insights from recent IMO meetings

Ipieca delegates attended the Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response 11 (February), the Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships 16 and the Marine Environment Protection Committee 81 (March) and participated in expert working groups and provided input on a number of topics.
